A Recap of Give Miami Day 2024.
A pure heart is full of good emotions that translate to good deeds. If you belong to a good family, you need a well-functioning heart for work, family, and life. Emotional intelligence cannot be neglected for good societal values and morals. Heart skills training is a way to learn how to communicate with each other healthily.
While heart skills help kids build relationships with parents, they are not just for families with ADHD but all who want to learn how to have healthy relationships.
Some studies have shown that heart-focused practices such as meditation, prayer, or simply being aware of one’s breathing can reduce stress and increase self-awareness. In addition, many psychologists now believe that improving one’s ability to manage emotions reduces stress levels more effectively than improving coping strategies alone.
According to a volunteer research project by Michigan State University to help young people develop life skills focused on relating and caring from the Targeting Life Skills Model under the area of the heart, some heart skills were listed that are associated with human behavior that focuses on how heart skills can be learned and improved. So, let’s discuss the heart skills every family needs.
What Are The Heart Skills Required to Improve Familial Relationships?
-
Emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence is often described as a combination of emotional and social intelligence, but it’s not the same. Emotional intelligence includes emotional awareness (the ability to recognize your feelings), empathy (the ability to recognize someone else’s feelings), and the ability to manage emotions. Emotional intelligence is used to identify, assess, and control the emotions of ourselves, others, and groups. It includes recognizing emotions, using emotions to facilitate thinking, understanding how emotions influence behavior and having a healthy relationship, regulating emotions, and appreciating differences in emotional experiences.
People with high emotional intelligence are generally better at managing their own emotions and understanding other people’s emotions. They are also more likely to be successful in their careers and relationships because they’re less likely to become frustrated or angry when things go wrong or don’t go their way — even when they’ve put a lot of effort into something that hasn’t worked out. The opposite is true for those with low emotional intelligence – they cannot manage their emotions and make it all about themselves.
Young children and teens need to be nurtured with emotional intelligence early on; this helps create a safe emotional background while building healthy friendship relationships. This, in turn, will cause a ripple effect in the emotional intelligence of more people.
Family interaction suffers without this emotional closeness since no one enjoys spending so much time with strangers. You must start with your emotional honesty and openness if you want your family members to get to know and lovingly accept each other.
-
Forgiveness
Many people live in their past without relinquishing the people who have wronged them, including family. Forgiveness involves relinquishing anger, resentment, or grievances against a person, group, or institution. The act of forgiving is often linked to resolving feelings of guilt and remorse following wrongdoing.
Forgiveness is an act that takes practice and commitment to do. However, once you have mastered it, you’ll notice a profound difference in your relationships and life.
Here are some tips for forgiving:
- Be compassionate toward yourself. Forgiveness is about letting go of anger and resentment, but it doesn’t mean condoning someone else’s behavior or excusing their mistakes. Forgiveness means understanding that everyone makes mistakes, including yourself — and that it’s not always easy to stay on track when life gets tough.
- Forgive other people first. When you’re feeling hurt by someone else’s actions or words, try to shift your focus onto how they may be hurting themselves by acting unkindly toward you or others (even if they don’t realize it). You’ll discover that giving them the benefit of the doubt makes it easier to forgive them — and yourself!
- Accept responsibility for your part in the situation. When two people are involved in an argument or conflict, each person will usually see themselves. See yourself first and choose to accept your fault (if there is any), and resolve the discord as an act of healing and doing your heart a good deed.
-
Effective Communication
Every good relationship is a product of effective communication. Although communication may mean different things to people, it is, first, a way to share information, ideas, and emotions between people. It is considered effective when the verbal and non-verbal messages are well received, comprehended, and interpreted. Developing communication as a heart skill may be difficult for some people as they might still need to learn effective communication or unhealthy communication skills.
For parents and children, communication must come from the heart. It is expedient to understand your parents or children thoroughly to grasp their speech, body language, and gesture. If a child is unnecessarily grumpy or defensive, find the cause of their reaction and communicate the opposite.
There are many different ways to communicate effectively with others.
- Listen if you want to be heard. In most families, the most common complaint is a lack of communication. The solution to “Why won’t they listen to me?” might be as simple as “You’re not listening to them.”
- Accept responsibility for your nonverbal cues. Young children and the elderly are particularly perceptive to nonverbal clues more than our words and body languages, such as our posture and facial expressions, reflect our sentiments. To evaluate your emotional consistency, you must listen to your voice, analyze your gestures, and gaze in the mirror. Speaking with clenched teeth while being loved doesn’t seem loving; it feels perplexing.
- Use your actions to leave a lasting impression. Regardless of what you say, your actions will convey your ideals. Don’t be a nag; set an example.
- Acknowledge your mistakes in front of all family members, especially the younger ones. Apologizing when you hurt someone demonstrates humility to apologize when you harm someone you love. No one is flawless, but everyone can learn at any age. By expressing remorse, you demonstrate that you can forgive yourself and others.
Also, learn to use “I” statements instead of “you” statements (i.e., say “I feel angry when…” rather than “You make me angry when…”). To connect and truly show that you care, you must have a substantial level of communication.
Ask if you are still determining what will work. It might be easier to bring up topics that you may have previously found difficult if you fully embrace your fear of change. Maybe your parents are simply waiting for your signal. Examine them. Change is one of the numerous chances you have to improve one another in a flexible, healthy familial relationship; communication is your opportunity to achieve this.
-
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It’s important to be a good friend, parent, or spouse. Learning to model empathy, for example, helping an elderly person with their luggage or saying “sorry” to a stranger who tripped, are simple ways your child, friend, or spouse can learn and practice empathy.
As a parent, ask your child what their friend might feel when their best friend doesn’t want to play with them anymore at recess because she has moved on to another group of friends (even though they were best friends for years). Or ask how they think the driver felt after hitting their bicycle with his car door when he wasn’t paying attention while opening it at the same time they were both driving down the street next to each other. Ask questions, let them talk about their feelings, listen carefully without interrupting and be genuinely empathetic. Simply, show that you truly care through your actions and kind words.
-
Conflict resolution
Conflict is a normal part of life and relationships. Many things can cause conflict. When you recognize the signs of conflict and respond appropriately, it is less likely to escalate into something bigger. Conflict resolution is the heart skill needed to resolve the discord or issue.
Conflict resolution is a process that allows people who are experiencing conflict to find solutions that work for everyone involved. This process can help prevent problems from escalating into bigger issues or even ending your relationship altogether.
It could be challenging for you to handle disagreement without being emotionally overwhelmed or losing your temper if you grew up in a household where all disputes were settled by fighting, screaming, or threatening violence. Learning new conflict resolution techniques that make everyone feel respected and understood rather than intimidated will take time and effort.
The ability to resolve conflicts is a vital skill for children, and anyone can learn it. Teach your child how to resolve conflicts by helping them understand what leads to a conflict, what happens during and after one, and how to communicate effectively.
Final Thoughts on Heart Skills
The most interesting part about heart skills is that you can learn the skills. Yes, you read that right! Heart skills training aims to improve interpersonal, intrapersonal, and familial relationships. It is based on the premise that you can learn to manage your emotions and feelings so that they serve as positive guides for behavior rather than as negative triggers for destructive actions.
As such, heart skills training provides an alternative approach to managing stress and developing emotional intelligence. Be Strong International has wholesomely created a platform for you Heart Skills to mend broken and negative heart skills patterns in your familial relationship to build a healthy relationship with people to connect and have healthy relationships – from familial relationships as a son, daughter, parent, or spouse to communal relationships as a friend, colleague, or neighbor- anyone.
